Good read: Ten Principles Of Good Design by Dieter Rams, explained and illustrated by Inksie Journal

The principles were written in 1995, and the team at Inksie went out to illustrate these principles and put them into today’s context. (via)

I like cakes, I like UX, so obviously this wallpaper design by Polish company Witflow has to go into the blog. Though I’m missing the joy of use bit in here. Shouldn’t that be the cherry on the cake?

Chair goodness - brought to you by Coke: Emeco 111 Navy Chair. I like!

So I love chairs, I love coke, and this project brings the two of them together in a project that’s all about recycling! What’s not to like?!

Here’s what the project ist about: Coke wants consumers to be better about recycling their bottles. So they teamed up with Emeco and developed the 111 Navy Chair. 111? Well, it’s made from 111 recycled plastic bottles.

What I like most about the approach is that a brand encourages sustainable behaviour by offering a tangible proof of the effect of recycling.

Bryan Lawson on how #design always involves #compromise.

“Design almost invariably involves compromise…. Rarely can the designer simply optimise one requirement without suffering losses elsewhere…. There are no established methods for deciding just how good or bad solutions are, and still the best test of most design is to wait and see how well it works in practice. Design solutions can never be perfect and are often more easily criticised than created, and designers must accept that they will almost invariably appear wrong in some ways to some people.” —Bryan Lawson

“More easily criticized than created”, indeed. If only we’d all learn to accept criticism gracefully, learn from it, and share constructive criticism with others.

Beautiful, amazing “Seed Cathedral” by Thomas Heatherwick #architecture #shanghaiexpo

Thomas Heatherwicks contribution to “The Future of Cities” follows the idea that “a building that can be the content of the exhibition that is inside it, as well as the building.” This is such an amazing construction. Made of hairs of fiberglass, each hair has at it’s end a small seed (60.000 seeds in all) that’s being illuminated by the light filtered through the fiberglass.

Beautifully illustrated covers of #Penguin classics. #RED #literature #typography #design

Eight penguin classics received a temporary new design, among them one of my favourite books, The house of Mirth by Edith Wharton. Nathan Burton designed this lovely cover.

Penguin classics are known for their black covers, but in this case, the publishing house collaborated with designers and the AIDS awareness fund (RED). The covers feature a quote from the respective novel.

Love the idea and this particular quote. But then there are very few lines that I don’t love about the House of Mirth. : )
